Jaroslav Koch

Jaroslav Koch (born January 20, 1910 in Pecka (northeastern Bohemia, now the Czech Republic ); † May 8, 1979 ) was a Czech psychologist and is considered the pioneer and founder of the Prague parent-child program PEKiP .

Life

He spent most of the first seven years of his life with his grandmother in Jičín and from 1917 to 1941 he lived with his parents in Vienna . There he attended the Czech primary and secondary school. After graduating from high school in 1929, he studied at the teachers' institute in Soběslav, Bohemia . In 1932 he was approved as a teacher in Czech schools. At the Vienna Psychological Institute he studied with Charlotte Bühler until she emigrated in 1938 and received his doctorate in 1940 with the thesis The social behavior of 10-14 year old boys in joint work and play . This was followed by a teaching position in psychology at the University of Vienna .

In 1942 he moved to Prague with his wife and two children , where he worked as a psychologist at the Institute for Human Labor until 1951 . In 1968 he completed his habilitation at the Charles University in Prague with his work on the biorhythms of infants. From 1951 until his death he conducted research at the Prague Institute for Mother and Child .

The focus of his scientific work was the child's development in the first year of life. In 1953 his first publications appeared on neuropsychic developments in infants and toddlers. With Zdeněk Matějček , he wrote the textbook Psychology and Pedagogy of Children for Child Sisters in 1960 . In the years 1972 to 1978, numerous of his research results were published in Germany and abroad. In 1974 his book Education of the Child through Movement was published for the professional public and was revised in 1977 under the title Education of the Child in the Family as a handbook for parents in several Czech and foreign language editions. The Prague parent-child program builds on his work on child development in the first year of life.
