Jaroslav Kratochvíl (born January 17, 1885 in Tučapy near Vyškov , † March 20, 1945 in Theresienstadt concentration camp ) was a Czech writer.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1900, he studied at the agricultural college in Halle-Wittenberg until 1906 . During the First World War he was captured in Russia and subsequently joined the Czechoslovak legions . Here he served himself up to an officer. After his return in 1920 he worked as an employee. He made himself known as a left-wing cultural-political journalist. From 1927 to 1929 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Nové Rusko (New Russia). In 1936 he joined the U-Block, an association of socialist realism. Because he was involved in the anti-fascist resistance, he was imprisoned by the Gestapo during the Second World War and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp . He died here a few months after his arrival.

Works

The writer and publicist dealt with topics such as village life and legionary service. In his publications on legions, he mainly criticized the heroic legends.
