Jarrod Smith (born June 20, 1984 in Havelock North ) is a New Zealand soccer player . The striker will play for the Seattle Sounders from the 2009 season . His father, Ian Smith, was a successful cricketer .

Club career

Smith began his active career with Napier City Rovers and then played in 2002 at Manawatu AFC . At the beginning of 2003 he left New Zealand and moved to West Virginia University to play in the local college team, the Mountaineers . In four seasons at the university, he scored 32 goals in 74 games, including 14 goals in 16 games in his last season at the university.

In 2007 he was selected first in the MLS Supplemental Draft by the Canadian MLS team Toronto FC . In August 2007 he signed with Crystal Palace Baltimore , but was immediately loaned to Hawke's Bay United in New Zealand . After his return he received a developmental contract from Toronto in early 2008 and made a total of 20 missions during the season. In 2008 he was selected in the MLS Expansion Draft by the Seattle Sounders, who played their first MLS season in 2009. Smith was released from his contract in July 2009 after an operation, until then he only came to two appearances in the US Open Cup .

National team

Smith played for New Zealand's U-20s and was in the U-23 squad to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics when they narrowly missed Australia.

In February 2006 he made his debut for the New Zealand senior team in a friendly against Malaysia . In the summer of 2006 he took part in the European tour with New Zealand and was used in friendly matches against Hungary, Georgia, Estonia and Brazil. During the qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Smith has been used four times and is with the team in the play-off games for the World Cup participation. In the summer of 2009 he was part of the New Zealand squad at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, but remained unused during the tournament.
