Ian David Stockley Smith , MBE (born February 28, 1957 in Nelson ) is a New Zealand cricketer and cricket commentator. He played in the 1980s and early 1990s for the New Zealand national team in the position of wicket keeper .

International career

Smith made his debut in the New Zealand national team on the tour in Australia in the 1980/81 season . He succeeded Warren Lees in the position of wicket keeper. He managed to establish himself in the team and to be set up almost continuously until the beginning of the 1990s with the exception of an injury break in the 1981/82 season. Smith had one of the highest hit rates ever - 99 runs at 100 balls - during his career as a batsman in ODI cricket . In test cricket he got two Centuries, both of which he scored in the Eden Garden in Auckland . He reached the first in the third test of the Tour against England 1983/84 , where he scored 113 runs. During the third test of the tour against India in 1989/90 , he was the ninth batsman with 173 runs and 136 balls, which is a record for this position to this day. After the Cricket World Cup in 1992 , he retired from international cricket.

Honors

With the 1994 New Year Honors, Smith was named Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to cricket .

After the sports career

Smith currently works as a radio host for Radio Live SPORT and as a commentator for SKY Sport in New Zealand for rugby union and cricket .

In the movie Love Birds - duck good, all good! from 2011 he is a cricket commentator.

His son Jarrod Smith is a football player who plays on the New Zealand national team.
