Location of the Jásselda (Ясельда) in the catchment area of the Dnepr |
The Yaselda River ( belarusian Ясельда , polish Jasiołda ) is a left tributary of Prypjat . It flows through the historical landscape of Polesia . The source is in Prushany district in Breszkaya Woblasz . It flows through the two lakes Motalskaje and Sporauskaje .
Its length is 250 km, its catchment area has an area of 7790 km². In the upper reaches, the Jasselda flows through the Białowieża Primeval Forest . The surrounding area consists of marshland. The area is snowy in winter.
The tributaries of the Jasselda are the Winez Canal on the right and the Shyhuljanka ( Byelorussian Жыгулянка ) and the Ahinski Canal on the left .
The Jasselda valley has an average width of 2 to 4 kilometers, at its widest point 8 kilometers. The bank is surrounded on both sides with swampy floodplains, these wetlands have a width of 800 meters to 1.2 km in the upper reaches, and in the lower reaches the wetlands are 1.5 to 6 kilometers wide. In the upper reaches, the river is canalized and 15 to 25 meters wide. In the lower reaches it takes up a width of up to 60 meters, but is not particularly deep there. After the inflow of the Shyhuljanka the gradient increases. The river reaches its maximum water level at the end of March. The Jasselda, together with the Ahinski Canal and the Shchara, form a water system. Most of the river is navigable, from the mouth to the Pinsk-Lohyshyn Bridge. On the shore there are several villages and archaeological excavation sites with finds from the Neolithic , Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements .
