The Jastorfer Lake is a Stretch between Uelzen and Bad Bevensen . It is located directly to the east of the Elbe Lateral Canal and was created in the 1970s through soil degradation during the construction of the canal. The western area of the lake with its bank areas was planned as a compensatory and replacement measure for the construction of the canal and was developed accordingly as a nature conservation water body . For this purpose, shallow and deep water zones and the shoreline of the later lake were created. Since November 1977 this area has been under nature protection as the " Jastorfer See bird sanctuary " . The remaining area was initially intended as a local recreation area . Today the lake, which is almost completely surrounded by wood and reed areas, is completely available for nature conservation, even if only parts of the area are protected as a nature reserve . It is an important living space and a. for water birds and amphibians . Around 140 bird species, including almost 50 breeding bird species , have been identified in the area of the lake .

On the north shore of the lake there is a viewing platform from which most of the lake can be seen.

The lake has been looked after by the Uelzen district group of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU) since 1984 .
