Javier Maximiliano Alfredo Hipólito Valle Riestra González Olaechea (born January 5, 1932 in Lima ) is a Peruvian politician of the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana (APRA), who was Prime Minister of Peru from June 4 to August 21, 1998 .

Life

Valle Riestra, son of Ricardo Valle Riestra Meiggs and his wife Hortensia González Olaechea y Olaechea, was a great-grandson of Colonel Miguel Valle Riestra, a veteran of the Saltpetre War from 1879 to 1884, and of the doctor and university professor Max González Olaechea. He himself attended the Colegio Sagrados Corazones Recoleta and then began in 1950 to study law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru , which he graduated in 1956. He then took up a position as a lawyer and began his political career in local politics as a member of the Lima City Council, of which he was a member between 1963 and 1969. During the military dictatorship of General Juan Velasco Alvarado , he went into exile in Spain in 1969 . There he completed postgraduate studies in law at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1970 to 1971 and was subsequently admitted to the bar in Spain.

After the end of the military dictatorship of Velasco Alvarado, Valle Riestra returned to Peru in 1976 and on July 28, 1978 became a member of the Constituent Assembly (Asamblea Constituyente) , of which he was a member until July 27, 1980. It was then elected as a member of the Congress of the Republic of Peru (Congreso de la República del Perú) and represented the interests of Lima in the Chamber of Deputies (Camara de diputados) until July 27, 1985 . He then became a member of the then Senate on July 28, 1985, as a representative of Lima, of which he was a member until its dissolution by President Alberto Fujimori on April 5, 1992.

On June 4, 1998, Valle Riestra became Prime Minister of Peru (Presidente del Consejo de Ministros) by President Fujimori as the successor to the resigned Alberto Pandolfi Arbulú . After the previous Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance, Jorge Camet Dickmann, resigned on June 6, 1998 , Jorge Baca Campodónico took over this ministerial office. Almost two and a half months later, however, on August 21, 1998, President Fujimori Pandolfi again appointed Valle Riestra's successor as Prime Minister. On July 26, 2006 he was re-elected as a member of the Congress of the Republic for Lima, to which he was now until July 26, 2011.
