The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium (also known as "Kaloor International Stadium" ) is a multi-purpose stadium in the southern Indian city ​​of Kochi , Kerala state .

history

The stadium opened in 1996 and offers 60,000 seats. This makes it the fourth largest Indian stadium after the Yuba Bharati Krirangan (120,000 seats), the Ranji Stadium (93,000 seats) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi (75,000 seats). The sports facility takes its name from Jawaharlal Nehru ; first Prime Minister of India (1947 to 1964). Originally built as a football stadium , international cricket games ( ODI ) are also held today . But also u. a. Exhibitions, film screenings or political events take place on the spacious grounds. The football teams from FC Kochin and Chirag United Club Kerala play their home games in the stadium. The most striking feature of the stadium are the four masts of the floodlight system . The curved masts protrude far above the interior of the stadium.

The first major event was the 1997 Nehru Cup , a football tournament organized by the Indian Football Association. With the game India against Iraq to about 100,000 people crammed into the overcrowded stadium. The first One-Day International took place on April 1st, 1998 in Kochi Stadium. It was then that the Indian and Australian cricket teams met . In 2006 the facility was renovated. The stands should also be roofed over; but what did not happen.

In 2010 the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium was modernized. A roof was erected; Seat shells will be attached to the stands and the pitch renewed. During the 2011 IPL season , the stadium served as the home of the Kochi Tuskers Karela, but they were disbanded after this season. There are plans of the Kerala Cricket Association to build a pure cricket stadium for 50,000 spectators in Edakochi (about ten kilometers south of Kochi). This should be completed in 2012, but was stopped due to doubts about the environmental compatibility.
