Jay Sekulow

Jay Alan Sekulow (* 1957 in Brooklyn ) is an American lawyer and the director of the evangelical life rights organization American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). Among other things, he defended US President Donald Trump in the impeachment proceedings against him.

Life

Sekulow was born in Brooklyn to Jewish parents. He grew up in Long Island and Atlanta . Sekulow was converted to Christianity while studying at Atlanta Baptist College . Sekulow graduated with a bachelor's degree in law from Mercer University and then obtained a doctorate in law. During his studies he was co-editor of a legal journal, the Mercer Law Review . The Regent University awarded him a doctorate in philosophy for a dissertation on the US legal history.

Career

As a young attorney, Sekulow worked in the office of the chief attorney for the Internal Revenue Service , the United States federal tax agency, as a tax attorney who represented the United States Treasury Department on cases before the United States federal court tax panel . Sekulow then opened his own law firm, but after the bankruptcy of his company took a position as a lawyer with the evangelical mission organization Jews for Jesus , for which he successfully led several proceedings before the Supreme Court of the United States .

In 1992 he became the director and chief attorney of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). ACLJ was founded in 1990 by evangelical television preacher Pat Robertson .

In January 2020 it was announced that he and the White House Counsel , Pat Cipollone , will lead the defense against the impeachment of Donald Trump.
