Jazz in Prince Karl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jazz im Prinz Karl is the name of a cultural initiative for the organization of jazz concerts in Tübingen , which originated in the mid-1970s , as well as the series of events that resulted from the initiative and the Jazz im Prinz Karl e. V.

history

As the first event, the initiative presented the “Ictus Band” in June 1977 in what was then the “Prinz Karl” cafeteria of the university in the old town of Tübingen. The venue thus gave the club its name.

The venue in the middle of the old town drew complaints from residents about the poor soundproofing after a few events. This resulted in the necessary search for other venues. As a result, “Jazz im Prinz Karl” concerts took place in the Wilhelmstrasse cafeteria, the “Zentrum Zoo” cultural center, the German-American Institute and the courtyard in Tübingen. More recently, the events have focused on the socio-cultural center “ Sudhaus ” in Tübingen and the “Zehntscheuer” of the cultural association of the same name in the neighboring town of Rottenburg .

Since it was founded in 1977, the association has presented well-known jazz ensembles and top-class jazz soloists from all over the world at these venues. In the past these included the Modern Jazz Quartet , Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers , the Art Ensemble of Chicago , the Willem Breuker Kollektief , the Sun Ra Arkestra, the United Jazz + Rock Ensemble , the Kronos Quartet , Betty Carter , John McLaughlin , Pharoah Sanders , Jan Garbarek , Chet Baker , Joshua Redman , Albert Mangelsdorff , Eberhard Weber , Paul Kuhn , Dave Holland , Ravi Coltrane , Vijay Iyer , Rebekka Bakken and many others.

Already early in the 1980s, a cooperation with the Südwestfunk and the local jazz editorial team developed, which has been continued with the SWR until recently and as a result of which a concert was broadcast live almost every year or recorded for later broadcast. Jazz im Prinz Karl was awarded three times in a row, in 2016, 2017 and 2018, by the renowned American jazz magazine Down Beat as a "Great Jazz Venue", i.e. an excellent organizer for jazz.
