Essling Jazz Park

The Jazzpark Essling is a park in the Essling part of Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt . It is located in the historic center of Essling and is named after the Esslingen “Jazz Quarter”.

history

War memorial

The northern part of today's Jazzpark Essling already had a park-like condition in the 1950s. The war memorial erected here for the fallen people of Esslingen in the two world wars was consecrated in 1957. In the late 1990s, a street was named after the jazz musician Fatty George, who grew up in Essling, and a park north of Großenzersdorfer Strasse was named after the jazz pianist Bill Grah, the foundation stone for this "jazz district". At the end of 2003, the construction of an event location began in today's Jazzpark, and in September 2005 the Kulturstadl , which has since been operated by the Kulturfleckerl Essling association, was officially opened. Around a month later, the Fatty George Jazzmus jazz museum and an exhibition pavilion were opened next to the Kulturstadl , each of which is housed in a listed, historic toilet facility. Due to a municipal council resolution of October 2, 2007, the previously unnamed park was finally named after the Esslingen “Jazz Quarter”. In 2011, the park was expanded to include a southern area, which is designed as an active generation park and opened in June 2012. The annual Esslingen Jazz Festival with live music, which was held in Bill-Grah-Park from 1999, later moved to the Jazzpark and is still held every summer with free admission.

The approximately 3470 m² Jazzpark Essling is bordered by Esslinger Hauptstrasse, Colerusgasse and Grosserweg, and to the west by the fencing of the neighboring property. The south-eastern part of the park is taken up by an active generation park , which is optically separated from the rest of the park by tall bushes. In the northern part a circular walkway leads to the war memorial, in the western part there is the Kulturstadl and the two exhibition pavilions of the cultural association.

The war memorial in memory of the men from Essling who died in the two world wars consists of a stone wall, for which some stones from the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Brücke (oldest predecessor of today's Reichsbrücke ) were used, and is made of a stone with the inscription "WORLD WARS 1914 –1918 1939–1945 ”crowned. Most of the wall is occupied by an inscription plaque with the names of the fallen. In front of it there is a flowerbed, which is flanked on both sides by a stone block with an inscription plaque with further names.

In the Kulturstadl , the design of which is based on a hay barn , events of the Kulturfleckerl Essling association take place several times a month . Next to it is a former toilet facility, which is now a listed building and serves as a pavilion for special exhibitions as part of large cultural association events. The historic urinal was built by Wilhelm Beetz in 1912 , was originally on Laubeplatz in the 10th district and was moved to its current location in 2005.

Next to the exhibition pavilion is another listed toilet facility by Wilhelm Beetz, which was built in 1912 and was originally located in Neuwaldegg in the 17th district at the end of tram line 43. After its restoration, it was set up in the Jazz Park and - together with the exhibition pavilion - was officially opened on October 26, 2005. The jazz museum located here, called Fatty George Jazzmus, houses a permanent exhibition on Fatty George with photos, posters, recordings, drawings and other exhibits.

The southern extension of the park also relates to the theme of jazz, in that a circular course and a park area surrounded by bushes are designed in such a way that, when viewed from above, they have the shape of a trumpet or guitar. As one of numerous Viennese active parks and at the time of the opening of the seventh generation active park, it has various senior fitness equipment and "head training" stations to strengthen physical and mental health. Six newly designed Donaustadt benches were set up as seating for the first time. They are in the district colors of the Donaustadt logo, petrol blue and red, and have D-shaped side panels. In addition, there is a sound installation as well as a board game table for chess and a person don't get annoyed .
