life and work

Jean-Baptiste Huet came from a Parisian family of artists. His father was the painter Nicolas Huet (also Nicolas Huet the Elder, * 1718, † after 1788), who had studied painting with Jean-Baptiste Oudry . His uncle Christophe Huet also worked as a painter. The sons of Jean-Baptiste Huet, François Huet (1772-1813), Jean-Baptiste Huet (also Jean-Baptist Huet II .; 1772-1852) and Nicolas Huet (also Nicolas Huet II .; 1770-1828) later also seized the painting profession.

Jean-Baptiste Huet initially received his training in his father's workshop. He was then taught by the painter Charles Dagomer, who was related to the Huet family . From 1766 Jean Baptiste Leprince was his teacher. It was through him that Huet met François Boucher , with whom he became friends. Pierre Paul Prud'hon was also one of his friends . From 1769 Huet was a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture . In 1769 he married Marie-Geneviève Chevalier, daughter of the painter Jean-François Chevalier . The couple lived in an apartment in the Louvre from 1770 . Huet received several orders to furnish the royal rooms of the Palace of Versailles .

Until the French Revolution , Huet was a successful artist and mainly painted landscapes and shepherd scenes based on the model of Boucher or depictions of animals in the style of Oudry. In addition, he created an extensive graphic work in various techniques. These works appeared in numerous reproductions from 1770 onwards. He also repeatedly produced designs for the Sèvres porcelain factory and worked on templates for tapestries. He also provided designs for wallpapers and fabrics for the factories of Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf and Jean-Baptiste Réveillon . In the last years of his life, Huet probably gave up painting and worked mainly as a draftsman and etcher. His work includes illustrations of books such as Contes by Jean de La Fontaine or Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce by Marie-Gabriel-Florent-Auguste de Choiseul-Gouffier .
