Jean-François Bonnel (born June 5, 1959 in Gien (Loiret) ) is a French musician ( clarinet , saxophone , also cornet , guitar , piano ) of traditional jazz .

Bonnel has been a member of various jazz bands in Montpellier LIKE Fox Troc, Hot Cévennes, Fanfare Bolchevique and Cossi Anatz since 1977 . From 1979 to 1989 he was in the Hot Antic Jazz Band , with whom he performed numerous concerts and tours abroad. He studied piano and clarinet at the Conservatory of Montpellier and until 1985 at the Conservatory of Aix en Provence, where he has been teaching jazz since 1987 (in 1990 he received his state diploma as a jazz teacher).

Bonnel played several albums in various bands, including two with Jabbo Smith and Benny Waters . In Great Britain he toured with Ken Colyer , with whom he also released several albums. In Germany he was touring with the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band and in the Netherlands with the guitarist Fapy Lafertin . He was also able to work with musicians such as Al Casey , Milt Hinton , Doc Cheatham , Dick Hyman and Buddy Tate . Since 1991 he has been active in various bands in the Marseille region, such as the Bernard Abeille Quintet, Swing Connection around Roger Rostan, the Octet Guy Longnon and the Phoenix Jazz Band . He also directed his own octet and recorded several albums with the Tuxedo Big Band .

At the Conservatory of Aix Bonnel discovered the talent of his student Cécile McLorin Salvant ; with her as a singer he released an album with his quintet. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Anachronic Jazz Band , with whom he recorded the album Back in Town . After Tom Lord , he is involved in 65 recordings between 1980 and 2015.

Prizes and awards

In 1984 (with the Hot Antic Jazz Band ) and 2000 (as a soloist) he received the Prix ​​Sidney Bechet of the Académie du Jazz .
