Jean-François Paroz
Jean-François Paroz (* 1960 in Moutier ) is a Swiss diplomat and ambassador . He has been the ambassador to Japan since September 2016 .
Life
Paroz studied French, history and philosophy at the University of Lausanne . After completing his master's degree in history in Lausanne, he completed postgraduate studies in international relations at the University Institute for International Studies and Development in Geneva .
In 1988 he joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) . After internships abroad and working in the FDFA main office, he worked as an advisor to Boutros Boutros-Ghali , who was then general secretary of the International Organization of Francophonie . From 2007 to 2009 he was ambassador to Senegal , Mali , Mauritania , Cape Verde , Gambia and Guinea-Bissau with an embassy in Dakar . During this time, Swiss people were kidnapped in Mali, and the Swiss embassy had to arrange for their release.
In 2012 he became ambassador to Hungary , where on November 5th of that year he presented his credentials to President János Áder . In November 2015 he was appointed Ambassador to Japan as the successor to Urs Bucher . On September 20, 2016, he officially assumed the role of ambassador to Japan with the presentation of his credentials in the Imperial Palace in Tokyo .
Paroz is married and has three children.
