Jean-Pierre Bosser (born November 14, 1959 in Versailles ) is Général d'armée and was commander in chief of the French land forces ( Armée de terre ) from 2014 to 2019 .

Life

He began his military career in 1970 when he entered the Saint-Cyr Military School and completed course no. 166 "1979–1981 Général Lasalle". After graduating, he chose the marine infantry as a branch of service and continued his training at the "École d'application de l'infanterie" (Infantry School) in Montpellier . He was then transferred to the "8 e régiment de parachutistes d'infanterie de marine" (8th parachute regiment of the marine infantry) in Castres. In this unit he served a total of three times: from 1982 to 1985 as "Chef de Section" (platoon leader), from 1986 to 1990 as "Officier adjoint" (assigned officer or assistant on the staff), then as "Commandant de compagnie" (company commander ). After being promoted to colonel on October 1, 2000 , he served as the unit's commander from 2001 to 2003.

In 1982 and 1992, Bosser was part of the planning staff of the Multinational Security Forces in Beirut , in 1983 he helped plan the “Opération Manta” in Chad and in 1989 was part of the staff of the “Opération Epervier”.

In 1984 and 1989 he was deployed to the Central African Republic and in 1990 he was finally responsible for the evacuation of French citizens from Port-Gentil in Gabon .

In 1985 he worked for a year as a technical military advisor in a parachute command battalion in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania .

From 1990 to 1992 Bosser held the post of head of the “Center opérationnel de l'état-major interarmées du commandement supérieur des forces armées en Nouvelle-Calédonie” (Operations Center of the Overseas Staff of the High Command of the Armed Forces in New Caledonia ).

In 1996 he was in command of the École supérieure de guerre for five years , where he was employed in the department “Études générales” (General Studies) of the “Direction du personnel militaire de l'armée de terre” (DPMAT - Military Personnel Directorate of the Land Forces) before he took command of the "8 e régiment de parachutistes d'infanterie de marine".

In 2002 he was at the head of his regiment in the "Opération Trident" in Kosovo , and the following year he was employed in the "Opération Boali" in the Central African Republic.

From 2002 to 2005 Bosser held the post of “Directeur des formations d'élèves des écoles de Saint-Cyr” (director of the student units of the schools of Saint-Cyr) in Coëtquidan. He then returned to DPMAT, where he became head of the “General Tasks” department and then “General Studies”.

Promoted to Général de brigade on August 1, 2007 , he became Adjutant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel Reserve in the General Staff of the Army in Paris .

On August 1, 2008, Général Bosser took over command of the 11th Parachute Brigade in Toulouse for two years .

On August 1, 2008, he was promoted to Général de division , associated with the transfer as deputy head of the "Performance-Synthèse" department.

With his promotion to the Général de corps d'armée on November 29, 2012, he was given the post of “Directeur de la protection et de la sécurité de la Défense” (Director for Protection and Security of National Defense) in Paris.

On July 15, 2014, the Council of Ministers decided to promote the Général de corps d'armée Bosser to the Général d'Armee. On September 1, 2014, Bosser took over the post of commander-in-chief of the French land forces, which he held until the end of July 2019.

On June 14, 2019, Bosser was elected General Director of the Mérieux Foundation, taking office in September 2019.

Bosser is married and has two grown children.
