Jean-Pierre Roth

Jean-Pierre Roth (born April 28, 1946 in Saxon ) is a Swiss economist . From 2001 to 2009 he was President of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

Jean-Pierre Roth studied economics at the Geneva University Institute for International Studies (HEI), where he graduated with a doctorate . He then completed advanced studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA and taught at the University of Geneva and at the HEI Institute.

Roth joined the Swiss National Bank in 1979. There he worked in various areas in Zurich and Bern. In 1996 he was elected Vice-President of the Governing Board by the Federal Council and in this function took over the management of Department II in Berne, which is responsible for the areas of capital markets, banknotes, business dealings with the federal government and management of gold stocks. In 2001, Roth was elected by the Federal Council to succeed Hans Meyer as President of the Board of Directors and took over the chairmanship of Department I in Zurich, which is responsible for the areas of economics, international affairs as well as law and services.

In addition, Roth was the Swiss governor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel from 2006 to 2009 . From 2007 to 2009 he also represented Switzerland in the Forum for Financial Stability .

On February 27, 2009, Jean-Pierre Roth announced that he would be stepping down as President of the SNB Governing Board at the end of 2009. In 2010, Jean-Pierre Roth was elected to the Board of Directors of Swiss Reinsurance Ltd , Nestlé SA and the Swatch Group . Since July 1, 2010 he has been President of the Geneva Cantonal Bank .

Roth is married and has three children.
