Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur
Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur (aka Daniel-Jean-Yves Lesur , born November 19, 1908 in Paris ; † July 2, 2002 there ) was a French organist and composer .
The son of the composer Alice Lesur studied harmony with Jean Gallon and counterpoint with Georges Caussade at the Conservatoire de Paris . He also had piano lessons with Armand Ferté and organ and composition lessons with Charles Tournemire , whose assistant at Ste-Clotilde he was from 1927 to 1937. From 1937 to 1944 he was organist at the Benedictine abbey of Sainte-Marie .
In 1935 Daniel-Lesur became professor for counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum . In 1936 he founded the Groupe Jeune-France with Yves Baudrier , André Jolivet and Olivier Messiaen , which advocated an expressive style of composition in contrast to the prevailing neoclassicism . From 1957 to 1961 he was director of the Schola Cantorum. In the early 1970s he was Inspector General for Music at the French Ministry of Culture. In 1982 he was elected to succeed Tony Aubin in the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
