Claude Roy

Claude Roy (born August 28, 1915 in Paris , † December 13, 1997 ibid) was a French author , journalist and translator .

Live and act

Roy was the son of the painter Felicien Roy (1872–1947). He completed his school days at the Lycée Montaigne, later he switched to the Lycée d'Angoulême. During these years he often spent his holidays in Jarnac ( Département Charente ), where he became friends with François Mitterrand . He later began to study at the University of Bordeaux and in 1935 he moved to the University of Paris to study law.

In parallel to his studies, Roy was interested in the philosophy of Lenin , Nietzsche and Spengler and was also enthusiastic about the works of Baudelaire , Gides and Proust . During his studies he also made the acquaintance of the Camelots du roi , became interested in the politics of Action directe and joined the Féderation nationale des étudiants d'action directe .

Together with Pierre de Bénouville, André Bettencourt and François Mitterrand, he met again and again in the convent of the Marist Fathers ( 6th arrondissement ) with representatives of the Cagoule (organization secrète d'açtion française). During this time Roy began to publish first articles in the magazines Nouvelle Revue Française and Revue du siècle . Together with Robert Brasillach u. a. he was also able to publish in Je suis partout and these were still close to right-wing extremism .

When the Second World War broke out , Roy completed his military service. In June 1940 he was taken prisoner of war and was able to escape to the zone libre in October of the same year . From spring 1941 Roy supported the Resistance , where he a. a. worked with Louis Aragon , Jean Giraudoux and Elsa Triolet .

In 1943 Roy was persuaded by Triolet to become a member of the Parti communiste français (PCF). During the liberation of Paris , Roy was a member of the Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI). As a journalist, Roy accompanied units of the British Army in April 1945 which liberated the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp .

After the war ended, Roy began writing for Combat and Liberation magazines. He reported u. a. from the uprising in Hungary and then distanced himself from communism . From 1957 he wrote regularly for the France Observateur and was always critical of French politics. He rejected the " French Doctrine " and in September 1960 was one of the signatories of the 121st manifesto

In 1958 the actress Loleh Bellon (1925–1999) divorced her husband Jorge Semprun and a few weeks later married Claude Roy in Paris.

Claude Roy succumbed to cancer on December 13, 1997 in Paris and found his final resting place there.
