Jean-Yves Duclos PC (born June 13, 1965 in Québec ) is a Canadian economist , university professor and politician of the Liberal Party . The focus of Duclo's interests lies in the areas of state and public economics, labor economics and development economics. Duclos has been President of the Treasury Committee of Canada in the Justin Trudeau cabinet since November 2019 . Before that, he was Federal Minister for Families, Children and Social Development since 2015.

Career, research and teaching

After completing his training at the Petit Séminaire de Québec , Duclos initially studied at the University of Ottawa from 1984 , but after a year he moved to the University of Alberta , where he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. The following year he graduated with a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science , where he completed three years later with the thesis “Progressivity, Equity and the Take-up of State Benefits, with Application to the 1985 British Tax and Benefit System “With Anthony Atkinson his Ph.D. Degree.

Duclos had already given his first lectures as a research associate and worked between 1992 and 1993 under the direction of Nicholas Stern in the research program on financial development in the transition countries China and Poland at the LSE.In 1993, he followed a call from Laval University from his home country as Assistant Professor . Here he was promoted to associate professor in 1998 and was appointed full professor in 2003. In 2014 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada .

In addition to his work in teaching and research, Duclos was also involved in various national and international organizations. From 2006 to 2007 he was President of the Société canadienne de science économique , which had awarded him the Prix ​​Marcel-Dagenais in his inaugural year.

On April 19, 2015, Duclos was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the Quebec district, which he has represented in parliament since the 2015 general election. In the Cabinet of Justin Trudeau , he was since Nov. 4, 2015 Minister of families, children and social development. In the 2019 general election , he was able to defend his seat in the lower house with 33.3 percent of the vote. In a cabinet reshuffle in November 2019 following the election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Duclos as the new President of the Treasury Committee. Ahmed Hussen took over as Minister of Family Affairs .
