The 29th Canadian Cabinet ( English 29th Canadian Ministry , French 29e conseil des ministres du Canada ) has governed Canada since November 4, 2015. This cabinet , led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , consists of members of the Liberal Party . A minority government has existed since the 2019 general election , whereas Trudeau previously led a majority government.
On January 10, 2017, ten days before the Trump administration took office in the United States, Trudeau reshuffled his cabinet. The previous Minister of Commerce, Chrystia Freeland , became Foreign Minister.
On August 28, 2017, Trudeau rebuilt parts of his cabinet. A notable change this time is that the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development is to be headed by two ministers with separate areas of responsibility, the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and the Minister of Indigenous Services . The previous “Department” is to be discontinued in the future, a time for this has not been determined.
On July 18, 2018, there was another major revision of the ministries. Some of the ministries were renamed or given additional tasks, but the person of the minister remained unchanged. At the beginning of 2019, two ministers , Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott, resigned within two months in protest against Prime Minister Trudeau and his stance in the corruption scandal of the construction company SNC Lavalin .
After the 2019 general election, Trudeau reshuffled his cabinet to numerous positions on November 20, 2019. In addition to the renaming of areas of responsibility and the relocation of responsibilities, six new cabinet members are shaping this restructuring.
On August 18, 2020, after the resignation of Bill Morneau, the position of Canadian finance minister was replaced by Chrystia Freeland .
