Bardish Chagger PC (born April 6, 1980 in Waterloo , Ontario ) is a Canadian Liberal Party politician . She has been Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Youth in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet since November 2019 . She was previously the Liberal Group Leader in the House of Commons and Minister for Small Business and Tourism. Chagger has represented the Ontario constituency of Waterloo in the House of Commons in Canada since 2015 .

life and work

Chagger's parents immigrated to Waterloo from India in the 1970s . Her father Gurminder "Gogi" Chagger was involved in the Liberal Party and admired Pierre Trudeau . Chagger stood as a thirteen-year-old as a volunteer in the Canadian general election in 1993 for the victory of Andrew Telegdi in the constituency of Waterloo. She attended the University of Waterloo and wanted to be a nurse, but later became the assistant to Telegdi, who sat in the House of Commons from 1993 to 2008.

Charger graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree . After Telegdi was voted out of office in 2008, Chagger directed events at the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Center.

In Justin Trudeau's 2013 campaign, Chagger was named the Liberal Party candidate for her constituency. With 50% of the vote, she won a seat in the Canadian lower house against the conservative Peter Braid .

On November 4, 2015, she was appointed Minister of Small Business and Tourism (English: Minister of Small Business and Tourism, French: Ministre de la Petite Entreprise et du Tourisme) by Justin Trudeau in the 29th Cabinet . On July 18, 2018, he was released from this office, which was split into two sub-departments. Mélanie Joly became the new Minister for Tourism and Mary Ng became the new Minister for Small Enterprises .

From August 2016 to November 2019, Chagger was the leader of the Liberals in the lower house. In the 2019 general election she was able to defend her seat with 48.8 percent of the vote. In a cabinet reorganization in November 2019 following the election, Chagger was given the newly created role of Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Youth. The parliamentary group was chaired by Pablo Rodríguez .
