François-Philippe Champagne PC (born on 25. June 1970 in Greenfield Park , Quebec ) is a Canadian lawyer , manager and politician of the Liberal Party . He has been Canada's Foreign Minister since November 20, 2019 . Previously, he was Minister for International Trade Relations and Minister for Infrastructure and Local Affairs. In the Canadian House of Commons , Champagne has represented the constituency of Saint-Maurice-Champlain in Québec since 2015.

Life

Champagne studied law at the Université de Montréal , where he earned a Bachelor of Laws , and Case Western Reserve University , from which he graduated with a Master of Laws in American law . He also completed a course in international and private international law at the Hague Academy of International Law . After completing his legal training, Champagne worked for various energy and engineering companies in Europe. Initially he was a corporate lawyer at Elsag Bailey Process Automation . In 1999 he became Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of ABB and from 2008 he held various managerial positions in the energy company Amec Foster Wheeler . In 2009 he was named Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum . He was also President of the Canadian-Swiss Chamber of Commerce and the Banff Forum.

Champagne speaks French , English and Italian .

Political career

Champagne is a member of the Liberal Party . He took part in the general election in 2015 in the constituency of Saint-Maurice-Champlain, which he won with 41.5 percent of the vote and thus moved into the Canadian lower house . He was able to defend his seat in the 2019 general election with 39.6 percent of the vote.

After his election to the House of Commons, Champagne was seconded on December 2, 2015 as Parliamentary State Secretary to Finance Minister Bill Morneau . On January 10, 2017, he was appointed Minister for International Trade. He held this office until July 17, 2018, when he became Minister for Infrastructure and Municipal Affairs. Champagne has served as Canada's Foreign Minister since November 20, 2019.
