In the March 2008 election, Hehr was a candidate for the Alberta Liberal Party in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta . He won the constituency Calgary-Buffalo , succeeding Harvey Cenaiko of the Conservative Party , who did not stand. In the subsequent election in April 2012, he was able to defend his mandate.

For the early election in May 2015, Hehr decided not to run again for the provincial parliament and instead successfully applied for a seat in the Canadian lower house in the Calgary Center constituency in October 2015 . The new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed him to his cabinet in November 2015 : first as Minister for Veterans Affairs and Assistant Minister of Defense, then from August 2017 as Minister for Sports and People with Disabilities.

After a former employee of the Alberta parliament accused him of sexual indecentities in the course of the MeToo debate , Hehr announced his resignation from the ministerial office on January 25, 2018. In the general election in October 2019, he was defeated by his opponent Greg McLean from the Conservatives and thus left parliament.
