Jonathan Wilkinson

Jonathan Wilkinson PC (born in 1965 in . Sault Ste Marie , Ontario ) is a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party . Since 2019 he is Minister of Environment and Climate Change in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau . Previously, he was Minister for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard . In the Canadian House of Wilkinson represents the constituency since 2015 North Vancouver .

Life

Wilkinson grew up in Saskatoon . He first studied at the University of Saskatchewan , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts . As Rhodes Stipendiant then he finished the course of study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Exeter College of Oxford University . After graduating with a Master of Arts degree , he returned to Canada and earned a second Masters degree in International Relations from McGill University . Wilkinson then served as an advisor to Saskatchewan Prime Minister Roy Romanov and in the provincial civil service. In 1995 he joined the management consultancy Bain & Company in Toronto . In 1999 Wilkinson moved to Vancouver to work for QuestAir Technologies , a manufacturer of gas cleaning equipment , which he became CEO in 2002. In 2009 he moved to the bioenergy company Nexterra Systems as Senior Vice President . Two years later he became CEO of BioteQ , a manufacturer of water treatment systems.

In his youth Wilkinson supported the social democratic New Democratic Party and was for a time chairman of the youth organization of the NDP in Saskatchewan. In 2015 he ran as the candidate of the Liberal Party in the constituency of North Vancouver, which he won with 56.7 percent of the vote against the previous conservative mandate holder Andrew Saxton . In the same year he was seconded to the Minister for Environment and Climate Change as Parliamentary State Secretary . In 2018 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Wilkinson as Minister for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. In the 2019 general election , he was able to defend his seat in the lower house with 42.9 percent of the vote, despite significant losses. Cabinet restructuring followed on November 20, 2019, when Wilkinson von Trudeau was appointed Minister for Environment and Climate Change. Bernadette Jordan took over his previous position .

Wilkinson is married and has two daughters.
