Jean Beck

Johann Ludwig "Jean" Beck (born October 18, 1862 in Mettlach ; † September 26, 1938 in Munich ) was a German glass and ceramic designer .

Life

Hans Ludwig, who later called himself Jean Beck, was born in Mettlach in 1862 as the son of an employee in the local stoneware factory Villeroy & Boch . His talent for drawing was discovered at an early stage and from the age of 12 he took remedial drawing lessons, later in the decoration workshops of the company in Mettlach, where his father was employed. After attending the arts and crafts school in Munich from 1881 to 1883, Jean Beck went to the academy in Paris and was also at the arts and crafts school in Dresden for a short time .

Jean Beck became head of decoration at Villeroy & Bock and head of the drawing department in Mettlach. He later worked at the Wächtersbach stoneware factory in Schlierbach . Afterwards, Jean Beck lived as a freelance ceramic artist in Munich. He held the title of professor and lived in Schwabing , Schwindstrasse 13.

In 1898 Jean Beck founded the "Arts and Crafts Institute for the Ceramic and Glass Industry".

Jean Beck became known for groundbreaking innovations in art ceramics and decorative glasses, which he made according to his own designs. Some of his glasses have been produced in the Freiherr von Poschinger'schen crystal glass factory in Frauenau since the late 1920s .
