Jean Berthoud (born 1961 ) is a Swiss private banker , General Manager of Bank Bonhôte & Cie from 1990 to 2010, since then its Chairman of the Board.

In parallel to his activities within Bank Bonhôte, he holds or has done several additional mandates, in particular as a member of the sanctions committee of the Swiss Stock Exchange , member of the board of the Swiss Bankers Association and elected member of the municipal parliament of the city ​​of Neuchâtel .

Studies and first functions

Jean Berthoud was born in Neuchâtel in 1961. He grew up in Paris and then came back to Switzerland to study at the University of Neuchâtel , where he obtained a degree in economics in 1984 . He then went to New York , where he attended Columbia University Business School , which he graduated with an MBA in 1986 . During his training, he joined the Sales & Trading department at Salomon Brothers , still in New York.

He then went to JPMorgan in 1987 , where he held a position as deputy director, portfolio manager and responsible employee for international clients in Geneva and Zurich .

Career at Bank Bonhôte

At the age of 22, Jean Berthoud was planning to take over Bank Bonhôte in Neuchâtel, where he was a customer, and he met Claude Bonhôte in Paris to make him a takeover offer. The director of the bank declined this offer because of the young age of his negotiating partner. 1987–1988 the bank is sold to the company Cortaillod Holding. Jean Berthoud then contacted the new shareholder to inform him of his projects for the company. Cortaillod Holding appointed him General Manager of the bank in 1990, at the age of 29. The main goal is to further develop and modernize the bank, since it is the last private bank in Neuchâtel and has not yet been computerized in any way.

The option right negotiated when taking up his functions allows him to gradually get more into the bank's capital. In 1992 he finally bought the majority stake in the bank's capital from Cortaillod Holding alongside private investors from Neuchâtel. As the main shareholder of Bonhôte, he will also become Chairman of the Board of Directors of the companies in the Bonhôte Trust Group and in London.

In January 2010 he resigned from the bank's management and took over the role of chairman of its board of directors.

Management mandates

In parallel to his activities at Bank Bonhôte, Jean Berthoud also sits on several financial bodies, associations and boards of directors.

Since 2006 he has been a member of the Sanctions Commission of SIX Swiss Exchange , the operator of the Swiss stock exchange. In 2010 he was elected to the board of the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA). As such, he will accompany Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer to Asia in 2017 , where he will meet the governor of the Chinese People's Bank . He is also a member of the committee of the Association of Swiss Administrative Banks.

He is a board member of the luxury watchmaking company La Montre Hermès , chairman of the foundation of the Society for Economic Sciences of Neuchâtel, a member of the Guy de Pourtalès Foundation and a member of the Swiss Welfare Foundation . After all, he has a seat on the Council of the University of Neuchâtel.

Mandates within the city

In the course of the 2000s, Jean Berthoud was elected to the municipal parliament of the city of Neuchâtel, where he held a seat for the Liberal Party of Switzerland for six years .

As a profound connoisseur of the history of his hometown and a passionate art lover, he has repeatedly distinguished himself for the preservation of Neuchâtel's cultural heritage. In addition to his resolution to ensure that the Bank Bonhôte “remains in the hands of Neuchâtel”, which he presented to Claude Bonhôte at their first meeting, he particularly brought back a pendulum clock by Abram Pétremand that was made in the city in 1709 brought back. When the Bonhôte-Immobilier fund was launched in 2006, he also stated that the fund's investments would allow several million Swiss francs to be transferred to the cantonal finances in the form of real estate transfer taxes.
