Guy de Pourtales
Guy de Pourtalès (born August 4, 1881 in Berlin , † June 12, 1941 in Lausanne ) was a French-Swiss writer .
Life
Guy de Pourtalès belonged to the Pourtalès family . His parents were the Swiss sailor Hermann de Pourtalès and Marguerite "Daisy" Marcet (1857–1888). He was born in Berlin, as his father there at the time as an officer in the service of Wilhelm I was stationed. When Guy de Pourtalès was six years old, the family returned to Switzerland. She first lived in the canton of Geneva and after his father's second marriage in 1891 in Mies . Guy de Pourtalès went to school in Geneva and Vevey and attended grammar school in Neuchâtel . After graduating from high school in 1899, he first studied chemistry and music in Germany, and from 1905 literature at the Sorbonne .
After completing his studies, Guy de Pourtalès stayed in Paris and later took French citizenship. In 1911 he married Hélène Marcuard. They had three children: Françoise, Raymond and Rose de Pourtalès.
His first works were La cendre et la flamme (1910) and Solitudes (1913). He also worked for the newspaper Revue hebdomadaire and co-founded the Société littéraire de France . He later translated plays by William Shakespeare into French. Guy de Pourtalès became internationally known for his biographical novels about the famous composers Franz Liszt (1925, German 1927), Frédéric Chopin (1927, German 1935), Richard Wagner (1932, German 1933) and Hector Berlioz (1939, German 1935) . 1940). Other of his novels are about Geneva patricity.
In 1939 Guy de Pourtalès returned to Switzerland, where he was seriously ill and had to witness the outbreak of World War II, the defeat of France and the death of his son Raymond at the front. In 1941 he died in Hopital Nestlé (Lausanne) and was buried in the Etoy VD cemetery.
