Jean Chanut

Jean Chanut , born as Maurice Chanut (* 1909 in Colombes ; † August 17, 1980 near Gisenyi in Rwanda ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, Trappist and abbot .

Life

Maurice Chanut grew up in Versailles , entered the Cîteaux monastery in 1926 and took the religious name Jean . He made solemn profession in 1931 and was ordained a priest in 1934. From 1939 to 1943 he was bedridden sick, then he was miraculously cured. From 1944 he was prior , from 1952 to 1964 (as titular abbot of Royaumont ) auxiliary abbot in Cîteaux, since the Trappist Abbot General was officially Abbot of Cîteaux until then . In 1964, Chanut became officially Abbot of Cîteaux and remained in that office until 1969. From 1964 the Abbot General was only considered titular ore abbot ( ex officio ) in Cîteaux.

Abbot Jean Chanut resigned from office in 1969 due to another illness and from 1970 to 1980 he was the chaplain of the Trappist Abbey of Clarté-Dieu in Rwanda . He died near the Mokoto Trappist monastery .
