Jean Nordmann

Jean Nordmann (born September 6, 1908 in Seuzach , Zurich ; † May 21, 1986 in Friborg ) was a Swiss businessman and president of the Swiss Confederation of Israelites (SIG) .

Life

Jean Nordmann was born as the son of the businessman Isidore Nordmann and Alice (née Bloch) in Seuzach in 1908 and grew up in Friborg. In 1925 he left the College of St. Michael and trained as a businessman in Germany , England and France . In 1940 he married Bluette Otschakowsky (* 1919 - † November 6, 2010), the daughter of a bank director from Lausanne . After visiting a concentration camp in Gurs , France several times with his wife , he reported on the situation in 1941. He and his wife committed during the second world war for the Jewish refugee aid .

In 1943 Nordmann was a member of the Central Committee of the SIG and from 1944 to 190 a member of the management . As part of this he was responsible for the youth department from 1944 to 1945, from 1946 to 1955 for the help and development department and from 1956 to 1967 for cultural affairs (+ deputy youth department). From 1968 to 1973 he was vice-president under the presidency of Georges Brunschvig and finally himself president of the SIG from 1973 to 1980. From 1967 to 1971 he also sat for the FDP in the Grand Council in Friborg. Nordmann was also president of the Jewish community of Friborg from 1957 to 1986, active on the board of the Christian-Jewish Working Group for Combating Anti-Semitism (CJA) from 1946 to 1986, as well as an officer of the Swiss army in the supply troops and in 1964 the first Jewish colonel in the Swiss army .

Through his various contacts with politicians and church representatives as well as his political skills, Nordmann made a significant contribution to the Christian-Jewish dialogue in Switzerland. He died in Friborg in 1986 at the age of 78. His estate came to the Archives of Contemporary History in 2000 and 2001 through his widow Bluette Nordmann . The inventory documents above all Jean Nordmann's work as a member of the management board and as Vice President and President of the SIG.
