Jeanette Wohl (born October 16, 1783 in Frankfurt am Main , † November 25, 1861 in Paris ) was Ludwig Börne's long-time trusted friend and correspondent .

Life

Ludwig Börne met Jeanette Wohl in 1816 and they both became lifelong friends. He read to her from his writings and was in lively correspondence with her. In her letters she took a great part in his social life and also influenced him strongly in his writing, so she encouraged him to write the Paris letters . It was only at her insistence that Börne used the correspondence that had not been published and thus documented for posterity the feelings and thoughts that preoccupied him at that time.

Although Jeanette Wohl was divorced after a short marriage and Börne initially had more than friendly feelings for her, the marriage did not take place between them despite his urging. This probably also prevented Börne's frequent illnesses and the diversity of denominations , because her mother was Orthodox Jewish .

Instead, on October 7, 1832, she married Salomon Strauss from Frankfurt am Main , but never gave up the friendship with Börne, despite her husband's initial resistance. Until his death, Börne even lived in her household in Paris and Auteuil . After Börne's death, Heinrich Heine made suggestive comments about this triangular relationship in his book Heine about Börne . Strauss later publicly claimed that he hit Heine in the face, whereupon the latter challenged him to a pistol duel.

Jeanette Wohl was appointed by Börne to be the heir to all of his literary property rights. With the support of her husband, she took over the editing of the estate and published six volumes of books with Bassermann in Mannheim. She and her husband established a fund in honor of Börne and looked after his memory until her death. Her grave is in the Père Lachaise cemetery .
