Jeffrey Albert "Jeff" Bourne (born June 19, 1948 in Linton , † July 31, 2014 in Swadlincote ) was an English football player . The striker won the English championship with Derby County in 1975 and later played successfully in the US NASL .

Athletic career

Bourne played until after his 20th birthday as an amateur for his hometown club Linton United , before he moved to the emerging first division Derby County in 1969 . Coach Brian Clough gave him two first probation opportunities at the end of the 1970/71 season, but the future perspective seemed more than vague for the striker, who mostly played in the reserve team. This proved true in the following two seasons, when Bourne was neither in the championship season 1971/72 nor in the following year, when the club ranked seventh in the final table, was used. After the turn of 1973/74 Bourne returned under Clough's successor Dave Mackay in the professional squad, which was mainly due to major injury problems in the club. He introduced himself well with his own goal to make it 1-1 against Birmingham City on January 1, 1974 and then showed himself in good shape with eight goals from the subsequent nine games. Although he didn't succeed after that, but with these performances he had recommended himself for the main lineup. With the signing of Francis Lee Bourne found himself pushed back on the bench. He was only in the starting line-up in seven of his 17 appearances. In the win of the English league title in 1975 he had his share regardless. In the next two years he played for Derby County only a total of eleven league games and before the end of the 1976/77 season he moved to third division Crystal Palace in March 1977 .

With nine goals in the remaining 15 league games, Bourne was initially largely responsible for the rise of the team coached by Terry Venables . After that, however, he did not build on the performances, met in 17 championship games of the 1977/78 season only once and then moved to the US NASL . There he had already competed for the Dallas Tornado in 1976 and with 15 goals he had made such an impression that they decided to sign up again. Bourne became a top performer in the United States and at his stations in Dallas (1976, 1978), the Atlanta Chiefs (1979, 1980) and the Seattle Sounders (1980, 1981) he scored 67 goals in a total of 132 games. In between he had played again in the English third division for Sheffield United in the 1979/80 season , but his focus was still across the Atlantic Ocean. There he was involved in indoor soccer in the early 1980s and played for the Seattle Sounders and later for the Wichita Wings . There were also appearances in the second-rate American Soccer League for the Oklahoma City Slickers and the Dallas Americans .
