Jeff Cowen

Jeff Cowen (* 1966 in New York City ) is an American photographer who is best known for his photo collages , street photography and portraits .

Art and career

After studying at New York University and Waseda University in Tokyo, he graduated in Oriental Studies in 1988 . After graduating, he took photos in the streets of New York and worked as an assistant to Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson . Some of the pictures that were taken in New York between 1988 and 1994 are now in the collection of the New York Historical Society .

From 1994 he taught at the LEAP. In the course of the 1990s, Jeff Cowen's artistic approach changed due to intensive studies in the fields of drawing and painting.

In the mid-1990s he took drawing courses that noticeably changed his artistic approach.

In 2001 he moved to Paris , where he enjoyed artistic and commercial success. In 2007 he worked with the filmmaker and author André Labarthe, founder of the Cahier du Cinema, for his exhibition The Lotus Eaters .

Today Jeff Cowen lives and works in Berlin .

Jeff Cowen's works are characterized by an elaborate work process in the darkroom of his Berlin studio. He subjects his landscapes, still lifes, portraits, nudes and abstract works to various processes of photo-chemical processing. He works analogously with silver gelatin photo paper .
