Jeff Simmons
Jeff Simmons (born May 9, 1976 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is a retired American racing car driver .
Career
Simmons began his motorsport career in 1981 in Midgets, where he was active until 1991. In 1994 he made his debut in the US Formula Ford in formula racing and took part in several races. After he started in the US Barber Race Series in 1996 and in the Barber Dodge Pro Series in 1997 and the US Formula 2000, he won the Barber Dodge Pro Series championship title in 1998 with three victories. In 1999, Simmons again decided three races for themselves and defended the title. In both years he narrowly prevailed against Todd Snyder . He also finished eighth in the Formula Palmer Audi winter series .
In 2000, Simmons moved to Indy Lights for Team Green . With three third places as the best results, he finished the season in seventh place overall. After a two-year hiatus, Simmons returned in 2003 with Keith Duesenberg Racing to the Indy Lights, which was now called the IRL Infiniti Pro Series . He won two races and was runner-up behind Mark Taylor . He was also tenth in the winter championship of the North American Formula Renault . In 2004 , Simmons did not have a full season in international motorsport. He made his Indianapolis 500 debut for Mo Nunn Racing . Another assignment followed in the IndyCar Series at Patrick Racing as a replacement for Al Unser junior . However, Simmons himself was replaced by Jaques Lazier after this race . In the overall ranking he finished 29th. He also took part in five races of the IRL Infiniti Pro Series. He finished second twice and finished the season in twelfth place overall. In 2005, Simmons completed the season in the IRL Infiniti Pro Series for Team ISI . Although he was the driver with the most wins with four wins, at the end of the season he was runner-up behind Wade Cunningham .
In 2006, Simmons planned another season in the IRL Infiniti Pro Series, which was called the IRL Indy Pro Series from that season . For Kenn Hardley Racing he won the first race and was second and fourth in the following races. Subsequently, Simmons left the IRL Indy Pro Series, in the overall standings he was finally twelfth, and switched to the IndyCar Series to Rahal Letterman Racing . The team hired him to replace the fatally injured Paul Dana . With two seventh places as the best results, Simmons finished the season in 16th place in the drivers' standings, losing to his team-mates Danica Patrick and Buddy Rice . In 2007 , Simmons initially stayed with Rahal Letterman Racing. After eleven races, however, he was replaced by Ryan Hunter-Reay . In the drivers' standings, he was 18th with a sixth place as the best result.
In 2008 Simmons took part in 12 of 16 Indy Lights races for Team Moore Racing . With two podium finishes, he finished the season in 13th place. He also started this season for AJ Foyt Enterprises at the Indianapolis 500. In the overall standings of the IndyCar Series, he was 39. After a one-year break, Simmons took part in an Indy Lights race for Team E in 2010 and finished 34th in the driver standings.
