Jeffrey Wimmer

Jeffrey Wimmer (* 1972 in Regensburg ) is a German social , media and communication scientist .

Life

Wimmer studied social sciences from 1994 to 2000 at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (diploma 1999). Research internships with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) took him to Buenos Aires and Bangalore. From 2000 to 2006 he was a research assistant at the communication scientist Romy Fröhlich at the Institute for Communication Studies and Media Research at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 2006/07 he was a teacher for special tasks at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies at the Free University of Berlin . In 2007 he was at the University of Munich with a thesis myth counterpublic to Dr. phil. ( magna cum laude ) doctorate. Then he was a postdoc at the Institute for Media, Communication and Information (IMKI) at the University of Bremen .

Since 2009 he has been junior professor for communication science with a focus on virtual worlds in the department of public relations and technical communication of the faculty for economics and media at the TU Ilmenau . In 2012/13 he represented the professorship for communication science at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and from 2013 to 2016 the professorship for communication science with a focus on public relations / technology communication at the TU Ilmenau. During this time he was also a member of the board of the Institute for Media and Mobile Communication (IMMK). In the summer semester of 2016 he was a professor there, but in October 2016 he took over the professorship for communication studies with a focus on media reality at the University of Augsburg .

From 2008 to 2014 he was Chair or Vice Chair of the Communication and Democracy Section in the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and from 2009 to 2015 spokesperson or Deputy spokesman for the Sociology of Media Communication Section in the German Society for Media and Communication Studies (DGPuK). From 2012 to 2015 he was a member of the advisory board of Studies in Communication , currently he is on the editorial board of Communication Management Quarterly and the scientific advisory board of medienbewusst.de as well as the program committees of Future and Reality of Gaming and Clash of Realities . Wimmer works as a reviewer for various specialist journals, research institutions and specialist societies.
