Jeffrey K. Zeig (born November 6, 1947 in New York City ) is an American psychologist , psychotherapist and family therapist. He is a student of Milton H. Erickson and has further developed his concept of utilization .

life and work

He graduated from college in East Lansing, Michigan with a bachelor's degree and a second in San Francisco with a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology . At the same time he received training from Bob and Mary Goulding in transactional analysis and from Salvador Minuchin , Virginia Satir and Carl Whitaker in family therapy . In 1973 he first met Milton H. Erickson and was deeply impressed. He then studied the work of his teacher intensively and received his doctorate in 1977 on an aspect of hypnosis at Georgia State University in Atlanta. In 1978 he moved to Phoenix , Arizona , the residence of Erickson. There he opened his own practice. In 1980 he published for the first time on Ein Lehrseminar mit Milton H. Erickson , the book was translated into eight languages.

Jeffrey Zeig is widely recognized in the United States therapeutic landscape. From 1974 to 1985 he was a Clinical Member of the International Transactional Analysis Association , and from 1988 to 1992 Adjunct Assistant Professor at Arizona State University . In 1990 he wrote a book on brief therapy entitled Brief Therapy: Myths, methods and metaphors.

In particular, experts consider the explanation, systematisation and structuring of hypnotherapy by Milton H. Erickson to be a merit of Jeffrey Zeig . With institutional work, numerous publications and teaching activities, he has helped this direction of therapy to gain international recognition. The focus of his own therapeutic approach is to utilize (use) not only individual characteristics of his client, but also his / her problems in order to construct solutions from them. At least when it comes to the goal of efficient therapy, he is in line with concepts as diverse as the short therapy at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto , the analytical short therapy approach of Habib Davanloo in Canada or the school in Milwaukee , that of Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer was founded.

Zeig is a multiple function holder. He founded and directs the Milton H. Erickson Foundation . He is president of the publishing house Zeig, Tucker & Theisen . He is considered to be the architect of the Evolution of Psychotherapy Conferences , which have been taking place since 1985, and organizes short therapy and couples therapy conferences. He is the editor of several journals, a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis , and a recognized Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy . He runs his own practice and leads workshops worldwide. He was and is invited to give lectures by well-known institutions such as the Mayo Clinic , Menninger Foundation or the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas .

His marriage to Sherron Peters divorced in 1987.
