Jelena Surkowa comes from the Stavropol area and started boxing as a teenager in 2003. After graduating from high school, she began studying sports at the state university in Kolmytskom, which has not yet been completed. The 1.75 meter tall boxer started as an 18-year-old newcomer in the heaviest weight class in women's boxing, which at that time had its weight limit of 86 kg. In 2006 she was the first Russian champion in this weight class. She began her international career in October 2006 at the Venus Cup in Vejle / Denmark , where she lost against her much more experienced compatriot and double world champion Irina Sinezkaja by breaking off in the second round. Surprisingly, she was still nominated for this year's World Cup in New Delhi , which took place in November. Jelena Surkowa defeated there Şemsi Yaralı from Turkey (11:10) and in the final battle also the defending champion Maria Kovacs from Hungary (20:16) on points and thus became world champion in the weight class up to 86 kg.

In 2007 Jelena Surkowa was again Russian champion in the class up to 86 kg with a knockout victory in the 1st round over Oksana Melechonowa. But she also suffered a few defeats this year. So she lost at the Ahmet-Comert-Cup in Istanbul in the final battle against Şemsi Yaralı, but with a tie of 17:17 only because of the auxiliary points that decided in favor of Yarali. At the Witch Cup in Pécs / Hungary she lost in the final battle against Maria Kovacs, with the point defeat of 4:15 being pretty clear. At the 2007 European Championships in Vejle / Denmark she was on top again and was also European Champion with victories over Şemsi Yaralı, Dinara Schurgunowa, Ukraine and Maria Kovacs.

In 2008 Jelena Surkowa became Russian champion in the weight class up to 80 kg with victories over Marina Maksimenko and Albina Wascheikina. At the world championship this year in Ningbo , China , she started again in the weight class up to 86 kg and lost her fight in the quarter-finals against the Chinese Zhang Lina just on points (6: 8). She was eliminated and came in 5th place.

In 2009 she took 2nd place in the Russian championship in the light heavyweight division (up to 81 kg) because she lost on points (4:11) in the final against Marija Jaworskaja . In 2010 she even appeared in the middleweight class (up to 75 kg) at the Russian championship. She had to accept a point defeat in this championship in the semifinals against Inna Sagaidakowskaja and therefore only finished 3rd. She did not appear at international championships in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 Jelena Surkina took 3rd place in the Russian Middleweight Championship. But she did not come to any international assignments this year either.

Explanations

  • WM = World Championship, EM = European Championship
  • KG = body weight
  • Medium weight, up to 75 kg, light heavy weight, up to 81 kg body weight
  • up to 2008 there were up to 15 weight classes for women. After a weight class reform, there are only 10 weight classes since 2009, as is the case with men. The names are now the same as those used by men
