Mária Kovács (born May 7, 1981 in Szeged ) is a Hungarian boxer . She is multiple world and European amateur champion.

Career

Mária Kovács, who comes from Szeged, started playing volleyball in her youth and then tried her hand at kickboxing . But she soon switched to Olympic boxing and found it to be the sport that appealed to her best. She has boxed since 1998 and belongs to the boxing club PVSK Szentlörincz . She is trained by Laszlo Gal. Maria Kovacs is employed at the University of Szeged.

She achieved her first successes on the international women's boxer scene in 2001. She started this year at the 1st women's boxing world championships in Scranton / USA . In the heaviest weight class, which at that time had its weight limit of 90 kg, she won her semi-final fight against Maria Reingard from Russia on points, but lost in the final against the American Devonne Canady on points (15:22) and was thus runner-up. World champion. After becoming tournament winner in the weight class over 81 kg at the renowned Witch Cup in Pécs / Hungary in 2002 with a point victory over Oksana Guljajewa from Ukraine , she also started again at the women's world championships, which took place in Antalya . She started there again in the heaviest weight class (up to 90 kg KG) and won her first world title ahead of Marija Jaworskaja from Russia and Devonne Canady from the United States. The individual results of these championships are not known.

In 2003, she also became European champion in the weight class up to 86 kg in Pécs . In doing so, she left Julia Gostraja from Ukraine, Marija Jaworskaja and Adriana Hosu from Romania behind. Her success story continued in 2004, because that year she was again European champion in the class up to 86 kg in Riccione / Italy, ahead of Anna Seltschuk from Ukraine and Marija Jaworskaja. In 2003 and 2004 there were no women's world championships.

In May 2005, Mária Kovács surprisingly failed to defend her European championship title in Tønsberg , Norway , because she lost there after she had safely outdone Maria Reingard (33:12) and Paulina Szmidt from Poland (24:12) in the final against Adriana Hosu just after points, with a tie of 14:14 the so-called auxiliary points decided in favor of Adriana Hosu. She compensated for this loss of title by winning the world title in September 2005 in Podolsk . There she won in the weight class up to 86 kg over Jacynthe Maloney from Canada on points (26:10), over Maria Reingard by breaking off i. d. 2nd round and also about Şemsi Yaralı from Turkey by breaking off i. d. 2nd round. With that she won her second world title.

In 2006, Mária Kovács won the European Championships in Warsaw again in the class up to 86 kg and clearly defeated Şemsi Yaralı on points (20: 8) in the final battle. At the 2006 World Championships in New Delhi , she won over her old rival Adriana Hosu by breaking off i. d. 2nd round, but surprisingly lost in the final fight against the only eighteen-year-old Russian Jelena Vadimowna Surkowa on points (16:20) and was "only" vice world champion.

At the Witch Cup 2007 in Pécs she took revenge for this defeat, because she defeated Jelena Surkowa there clearly on points (15: 4). With another victory over Şemsi Yaralı, she won this tournament. A few months later, at the European Championships in Vejle / Denmark in 2007 , the tide turned again, because Maria Kovacs lost there again in the final against Jelena Surkowa on points (4-8). In December 2007 she won the first time at the championships of the European Union in Lille in the weight class up to 86 kg. With Şemsi Yaralı (7: 5) and Adriana Hosu (11: 2) she defeated two opponents who demanded everything from her. Little did she suspect after this victory that this would be the last start in this weight class. Shortly after this success, she developed major knee problems, which meant that she could hardly exercise in the first few months of 2008 and also lost a lot of weight. At the Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul in 2008, she started in the weight class up to 80 kg for the first time and won this tournament with three wins. At the 2008 World Cup in Ningbo / China, however, Maria Kovacs disappointed, because she was already defeated in the round of 16 by the local Tang Jieli, who had not had any great merits as a boxer, on points (6: 7), was eliminated and only got the ninth place.

In 2009, too, she could not quite build on the successes of earlier years. At the EU Championships in Pazardzhik / Bulgaria, she was defeated in the light heavyweight division (up to 82 kg) in the final of the Bulgarian Desislawa Lazarowa . At the European Championships this year in Mykolaiv / Ukraine she won a bronze medal after losing to Luminata Turcin from Romania, but only because there were only four participants at the start. In 2010 Maria Kovacs caused another surprise, because she continued to train and has therefore started in the middleweight class (up to 75 kg) since the beginning of this year. The purpose of this event will be that she intends to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where competitions for women in the weight classes up to 51 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg will take place for the first time. At the Hungarian Championships in 2010 she then won the title in the middleweight class with a point victory over the thirteen-time Hungarian champion in this class Anita Ducza (5-0). There was already a clear upward trend in her compared to the two previous years. This trend continued at the championships of the European Union in Keszthely / Hungary, because they won there with points over Nouchka Fontijn, Netherlands (5: 1), Desislawa Lazarowa (3: 0), Elif Guneri, Turkey (9: 3 ) and Alexandra de Hutton, France (6: 2) the title.

She also fought successfully at the 2010 World Championships in Bridgetown / Barbados and reached the semi-finals with points wins over Andreia Bandeira, Brazil (7: 5), Erika Guerrier, France (18: 2) and Nouchka Fontijn (19: 7) met the reigning world champion Li Jinzi from China. In the end the fight was tied at 14:14. However, the auxiliary points decided in favor of Li Jinzi. Maria Kovacs won a world championship bronze medal. In November 2010 she was still in the United States and was attending the 1st Women's Intern for four consecutive days. Dual Series in Oxnard and won there twice over Alysia Defazio (19: 9 and 10: 5), over Lisbet Vargas (10: 0) and without a fight over Kalita Marsh, all boxers from the United States.
