Jemgum (also van Jemgum , von Jemigum or von Gemingen ) is the name of an originally East Frisian chief and later a Westphalian noble family .

history

A family from the East Frisian Jemgum ( district of Leer ), from which several chiefs emerged, gave themselves the nickname van Jemgum in the 14th century , but this was not always mentioned and not with every member of the family. The oldest known representative of the sex that gave itself the nickname "van Jemgum" is Ewo Tammena (1335-1411). Ewo and his son Eggerick Ewen (1355 – after 1411) were evidently chiefs in Jemgum, as was probably Eggerick's son Ewo Erikes (1380–1458).

On the one hand, the chief family seems to have left Jemgum before 1500 for Emden and the north ; on the other hand, part of the family seems to have stayed in Jemgum. Albert von Rhaude or von Jemgum (1500–1545) was Drost of the Count of East Friesland in Friedeburg , Aurich and Berum . His son Ewo Alberda von Jemgum tho Ekel (1530–1587) shifted the focus of life of the sex to Ekel in 1566 , where he had married into the Uldinga family.

Around 1670 Ewo Alberda's grandson Ewo von Jemgum (born 1592) inherited the Querlenburg in Brockdorf , on which he had previously lived with his wife Elisabeth Lucie von Dorgelo . In 1721 Maria Elisabeth Clara von Boenen, widow of Rudolf Caspar von Jemgum, sold the property to the treasurer Wilhelm Ferdinand von Galen . In the middle of the 18th century, the last representatives of the von Jemgum family died out in the male line in Brockdorf.

coat of arms

In 1880, Johannes Holtmanns describes the coat of arms of the von Jemgum family as follows: Shield: split, on the right in black a half golden eagle at the crack, on the left in red two golden lilies on top of each other. Helmet decoration: a golden lily between a golden and a red wing.

Until 1961, the coat of arms is said to have been on Albert von Jemgum's tombstone, which is said to have been in the Jemgum church tower in 1961 .
