Jenő Heltai (born August 11, 1871 in Pest , Austria-Hungary ; died September 3, 1957 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian poet, writer and journalist of Jewish descent.

Life

He published his first poems at the age of 14. After dropping out of law school, he first wrote for Budapest daily newspapers, then became a member of the army. He traveled a lot and lived in Paris , London , Vienna , Berlin , Istanbul . He later turned to writing and became successful as a playwright. With The Jaguar , Jenő Heltai broke new ground in Hungarian humor.

He fled the Jewish laws abroad; after 1945 he returned to Hungary as a devout Christian. Towards the end of his life he received the honor he deserved: first he was awarded the French Legion of Honor , and in the last year of his life he was awarded the Hungarian Kossuth Prize .

Works

His prose and poems are cheerful, light and ironic. Particularly noteworthy are his stories about the bohemian city of Budapest and the political conditions before the First World War . Later he withdrew from politics and so he was able to live in peace in all systems (except for the brief emigration).
