Jenny Oropeza

Jennifer Ann "Jenny" Oropeza (born September 27, 1957 in Montebello , California , † October 20, 2010 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 2000 to 2006 she was a member of the California State Assembly , the lower house in the California state parliament ; thereafter she sat in the California Senate from November 2006 until her death .

Jenny Oropeza, Mexican origin was, in 1994, the first Latina to the City Council of Long Beach ( Long Beach City Council was elected), and re-elected in the year 1998th As a member of the State Assembly in California, she was named Legislator of the Year in 2005, and the following year she received the Smith-Weiss Environmental Champion Award for her contribution to environmental protection. In 2007, she ran for the successor to the late Congressman Juanita Millender-McDonald in the 37th  district of her state, but lost in the Primary of the Democrats to Laura Richardson .

In the California Senate she represented the communities of Carson , El Segundo , Hermosa Beach , Lomita , Manhattan Beach , Redondo Beach and Torrance as well as parts of Los Angeles and Long Beach. She died of long-running cancer in October 2010, two weeks before she ran for the Senate again; Polls predicted her safe victory.
