Jerónimo Lobo

Jerónimo Lobo (* 1593 ; † January 29, 1678 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese explorer , Jesuit and missionary .

Life

Lobo joined the Jesuit Order in 1609 . In 1622 he went to Goa as a missionary . In 1624 he set out on his first trip to Ethiopia , where, according to Zedler, he was deported by the Ottoman authorities. In 1625 he made the trip to Ethiopia, u. a. with Afonso Mendes , the Patriarch of Ethiopia . Lobo settled in Fremona , from where he worked as a missionary until the Catholic missionaries were banished from Ethiopia in 1634 by Emperor Sissinios. After returning to Goa on December 8, 1634, he traveled to Europe and was shipwrecked. After being abandoned by the Dutch on a desert island, it finally got to Rome via Cádiz , Seville and Lisbon . In 1640 he went back to Goa, where he worked as superior , then as provincial of the Jesuit monastery. In 1658 he returned to his native Portugal.
