Jeremy Sanders (born May 3, 1948 in London ) is an English chemist. He is known for contributions to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and supramolecular chemistry .

Sanders studied chemistry at Imperial College London with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and a doctorate with Dudley Williams at Cambridge University in 1972 (with a thesis on a chemical shift reagent in NMR, a precursor to the later popular Eu (FOD)). In 1972 he became a fellow at Christ's College. He was a post-doctoral student at Stanford University . He became a demonstrator, a lecturer in 1978 , a reader in 1998 and a professor at Cambridge in 1996. From 2000 to 2006 he headed the chemistry faculty in Cambridge and from 2009 to 2011 the School of Physical Sciences. From 2006 to 2010 he was Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university and organized the 800th anniversary celebrations.

In NMR spectroscopy, he developed in vivo techniques for applications in cell and molecular biology, was involved in the development of lanthanide shift reagents as described above , developed NOE difference spectroscopy and undertook the first complete analysis of proton spectra of steroids .

In supramolecular chemistry, he and Jean-Marie Lehn pioneered dynamic covalent chemistry and dynamic combinatorial chemistry (DCC) in the 1990s . He synthesized various partially biomimetic (enzyme action and photosynthesis) porphyrin complexes and thereby confirmed his theory of interaction. His investigations also provided one of the first confirmations of the long-sought inversion region according to Marcus in photoinduced electron transfer.

In 2012 he succeeded in synthesizing an organic knotane in the form of a clover leaf loop . He synthesized catenanes and supramolecular nanotubes that can bind fullerenes.

In 2009 he received the Davy Medal , in 1994 the Loschmidt Prize, in 1996 the Pedler Medal and in 1995 the Meldola Medal. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society since 1995 . In 2014 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
