His twin brother Jermell Charlo, who is one minute younger (these two names are very easy to confuse), is also a boxer.

His brother Jermell Charlo qualified for the Olympic Games, but did not win a medal and then became a professional after a record of 58 wins and 8 losses. Jermall Charlo's record was 65 wins and 6 losses.

Professional career

The southpaw decided his professional debut on September 12, 2008 against his compatriot Cimarron Davis with a technical knockout in round 2. In 2013 he beat Orlando Lora (23-3), Luis Hernandez (22-5) and Antwone Smith (23-4), among others.

On September 12th in 2015 he met the two-time (and also reigning) IBF world champion Cornelius Bundrage . Charlo managed the surprise by knocking Bundrage heavily in the third round and thus taking away the IBF world championship belt. He defended the title against Wilky Campfort, Austin Trout and Julian Williams before stepping down in February 2017 to move up to middleweight division.

After a preparatory victory against Jorge Sebastian Heiland (29-4), he won the interim world championship of the WBC on April 21, 2018 by knockout in the second round against Hugo Centeno Junior (26-1). In December 2018 he defended the title unanimously against Matwei Korobow (28-1).
