Jeroen Sidney Dickschat (born June 3, 1977 in Nordhorn ) is a German chemist and university professor. Since 2014 he has been Professor of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

Dickschat grew up in Nordhorn and graduated from high school in 1996 with a focus on the natural sciences . After completing basic military service , he began studying chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1997 . In 2002 he obtained his diploma with a thesis on volatile natural substances from myxobacteria with Stefan Schulz . He wrote his dissertation in the same working group as a scholarship holder of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie and in 2005, with a broader follow-up work on the identification, synthesis and elucidation of the biosynthesis of bacterial natural substances, summa cum laude, was awarded a Dr. rer.-nat. PhD . This was followed by stays as a post-doctoral student with Rolf Müller at the Saarland University (2005 to 2006) and as a scholarship holder of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina with Peter Francis Leadlay at the University of Cambridge . In May 2008 he began his independent scientific work as a fellow in the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation at the Technical University of Braunschweig. In 2013 he completed his habilitation in organic chemistry and took over a professorship at the Philipps University of Marburg . In spring 2014, Dickschat turned down an offer at the University of Hamburg and was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Bonn.

research

Together with his working group, Dickschat is researching the biosynthesis of natural substances, primarily from bacteria and fungi . The genes relevant for natural product biosynthesis are expressed heterologously and the purified enzymes and their substrates are converted in vitro in order to simulate cellular processes of biosynthesis in the laboratory. A special approach of his research, which was largely developed in his working group, lies in the combination of this biochemical approach with the organic synthesis of isotope-labeled substrates in order to elucidate enzymatic mechanisms. Furthermore, the analysis and identification of new volatile natural products as well as the total synthesis of natural products are processed.

Honors

In 2014, Dickschat received the Dechema young scientist award for natural product research . In 2016 he was visiting professor at the Dutch Institute for Chemical Ecology (NIOO- KNAW ) in Wageningen and has since been associated with this institute through an honorary membership. He is also co-editor and member of the steering committee of the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry .
