Jerry Tersoff
Jerry David Tersoff (born June 12, 1945 in Washington, DC ) is an American physicist who specializes in theoretical solid-state physics.
Tersoff received his BA in Physics from Swarthmore College in 1977 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California . He then was a postdoctoral fellow at Bell Laboratories from 1982 to 1984 before becoming a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center .
Tersoff's main research interests are in the fields of molecular dynamics , surface physics and materials science. He dealt with the theory of epitaxial growth and scanning tunneling microscopy , Schottky barriers and semiconductor band structures at heterojunctions , the electronic structure of solid surfaces and interfaces.
Among other things, he investigated how mechanical stresses in hetero-epitaxial growth can lead to controlled self-assembly and self-organization of nanostructures such as quantum dots and quantum wires .
