Jerzy Bielecki (born March 21, 1921 in Słaboszów ; † October 20, 2011 in Nowy Targ ) was a Polish Auschwitz survivor, teacher and, very late in his life, also an author. His life story became known from 2011 through the dramatic film adaptation by Pamela Katz and Anna Justice under the title The Lost Time (USA: Remembrance) .

Life

Bielecki completed his school days in Krakow. After the German occupation of Poland , Bielecki tried to flee to Hungary together with five comrades in order to join the Polish army in exile in France .

Bielecki was arrested by the Gestapo in 1940 while trying to flee to Hungary and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp on June 14, 1940 . There he was one of the first prisoners and was tattooed with the prisoner number 243. In July 1944, he managed to escape from the camp in an SS uniform and with a permit, together with a Jewish friend, Cyla Cybulska, whom he had met in the camp. They were separated in the war. 39 years later, in 1983, they met again when Cyla Cybulska visited Bielecki several times in Poland and together they also visited the Auschwitz concentration camp.

After the war he became a teacher in Nowy Targ, Poland, where he lived until his death. His book “Who saves a life ...” received a lot of recognition and attention. In 1985 Bielecki was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem .
