Jesse Leonard Greenstein
Jesse Leonard Greenstein (born October 15, 1909 in New York , NY , USA , † October 21, 2002 ) was an American astronomer.
life and work
He graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1929 and a Master of Science degree in 1930 . This was followed by a doctorate in 1937.
From 1937 to 1948 he was employed at the Yerkes Observatory . He then moved to the California Institute of Technology (CalTech). There he became the founder of the astronomy training program and remained so until 1972. In this mission he was also active at the Palomar Observatory and Mount Wilson Observatory . In 1980 he officially resigned from CalTech's faculty.
His main interest was the physics of astronomical objects and here in particular the quasars . He discovered over 500 white dwarfs.
He died of a fall three days earlier in which he broke his hip.

Greenstein was married to Naomi Kitay Greenstein for 68 years, who died shortly before him. The marriage had two sons, Peter and George.
