life and career

Pengilly was born in Subiaco, near the Western Australian metropolis of Perth, and then lived on the Fair View Farm in Kellerberrin , the capital of the LGA Kellerberrin Shire in the Western Australian Wheatbelt . In 1930 the Sunday Times (Sunday edition of The West Australian newspaper ) published two short stories by the then eleven and twelve year olds.

Pengilly began cycling in 1937 and soon developed a taste for road racing. She proved to be extremely talented and soon set records at regional and national levels. In addition, she set three world records (over 50, 75 and 100 miles ) in the late 1930s and early 1940s before cycling in Australia was severely reduced due to the war .

In addition, Pengilly achieved several course records in Western Australia . Particularly noteworthy is her record for the distance from Perth to York (60 miles, equivalent to 97 kilometers), which she set on July 26, 1940. Although she drove in strong winds and at times heavy rain and also suffered a tire defect , she was able to improve the old best time by over 29 minutes to 2:55:45 hours. She drove it one of Oscar Egg -designed wheel with derailleur .

Pengilly, who last worked for Bushells , a coffee vendor in Fremantle , died in 1945 at the age of 26 in a car accident near Swan Brewery in Perth. The sports car in which she was a passenger slipped when the road was wet when crossing tram tracks and collided with an oncoming truck. At the time of her death, she held 3 world records, 17 Australian and 23 Western Australian records.
