Yevgeny Makarowitsch Babitsch ( Russian Евгений Макарович Бабич ; born January 7, 1921 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ; † June 11, 1972 ibid) was a Soviet ice hockey player and coach , soccer player and Olympic champion .

Career

Babitsch began his career as a soccer and bandy player . In the 1945/46 season he won the USSR Bandy Cup with CSKA Moscow. He was also 1946 and 1947 Soviet football champions and 1949 runner-up with the football team of CSKA Moscow. For ZSKA, he completed a total of nine football matches in which he scored one goal. In 1950 he was also used as a footballer at WWS MWO Moscow and played in four more games.

At the same time, he began to play ice hockey for the army club in winter and won three championships in a row between 1948 and 1950. In 1950 he was delegated to WWS MWO Moscow . With this team he won three more championships until 1953, before returning to CSKA and winning the championship again in 1955 and 1956. In total, he scored 144 goals in 130 games in the Soviet league . From 1947 to 1955 he was awarded the Golden Helmet , a kind of all-star honor, every year .

International

At the end of his career he was appointed to the team of the Soviet national ice hockey team. On January 29, 1954, he was in a game against Finland for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with a gold medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics . For the national team, he scored 19 goals in 60 international matches. At the ice hockey world championships he was world champion three times with his team (1954, 1956 to 1957). In 1953 he was named the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR . On March 4, 1957, he played his last international match.

As a trainer

After his career ended in 1957, he first graduated from the Military Institute for Physical Culture and Sport and subsequently worked as an ice hockey coach. He made his first experiences as a coach during the 1952/53 season when he led WWS MWO Moscow as player-coach on the ice.

In the 1961/62 season he was head coach of CSKA Moscow, 1962/63 at SKA Leningrad and between 1964 and 1968 at ASK Vorwärts Crimmitschau from the GDR. In the season 1969/70 he looked after rubber Omsk as head coach. Although Babitsch was successful in his work, he suffered from depression and often mentioned suicidal thoughts in the presence of his friends. In 1972 he hanged himself in the bathroom of his apartment in Moscow.
