Surname

The name of the longest lake in the former West Prussia is derived from the old Prussian term geeyse for heron .

geography

The Jeziorak extends over a length of approx. 27 km from Iława (Deutsch Eylau) on the south bank to Zalewo (Saalfeld) in the north and lies at an altitude of 100 m above sea level.

It is connected to some smaller lakes by canals. It absorbs water from the Ewingsee in the north and has an outflow via the Iławka (Eylenz) into the Drwęca (Drewenz) in the south.

The lake used to be on the border between East and West Prussia . In 1860 the lake was connected to the city of Elbing by the Oberland Canal .

There are several islands in the Jeziorak. Is located in the southern tip of the lake in Iława the 82.4-hectare island of Great Werder with remnants of a Old Prussian centrifugal or Wallburg .
